Course 03  ·  Surgical Execution

A 2-Day Live Surgery Mentorship

SFOT: The Technique

Learn how to treatment plan and execute SFOT using a phenotype-driven algorithm for the interdisciplinary patient.

November 13–14, 2026  ·  PMSS Education Center, Glenview, Illinois  ·  $7,500

Seating Limited to 30 Participants

Course Summary

Master the surgical technique of phenotype modification.

A recent update in periodontal terminology includes a shift from the term "biotype," replacing it with the term "phenotype." There is growing interest and acceptance in developing the dentoalveolar bone complex to expand the orthodontic boundary conditions in perio-ortho therapies.

This course is geared towards learning the technique of phenotype modification therapy via corticotomy surgery, dentoalveolar decortication, and bone morphotype augmentation. The Technique Course is a 2-day surgical mentorship program for clinicians ready to master corticotomy-assisted orthodontic therapy and phenotype modification surgery.

Join us for this unique course and gain the knowledge, skills, and confidence to perform complex phenotype modification surgery in your practice.

Educational Objectives

01

Diagnostic Findings for the IDT Patient

Review key diagnostic findings critical to treatment planning the interdisciplinary patient.

02

Dentoalveolar Bone Phenotypes & the Advantage of SFOT

Appreciate dentoalveolar bone phenotypes and the advantage of SFOT.

03

Biology, Risks, Benefits & Execution of SFOT

Present the biology, risks / benefits, and execution of SFOT in advanced interdisciplinary therapy.

04

Structure, Function, Behavior

Learn how to treatment-plan the IDT patient using the concepts of structure, function, and behavior to drive treatment decisions.

05

Mastery of Phenotype Modification Surgery

Master the surgical nuances and complexities of phenotype modification surgery (SFOT).

From One Case

Three views of the same patient.

Pre-treatment, the simulated outcome of conventional orthodontics alone, and the actual result after SFOT.

CBCT — Pre-Op: Dentoalveolar bone morphotype
Pre-Op Dentoalveolar bone morphotype and tooth position.
CBCT — Simulated Post-Ortho result
Simulated Post-Ortho What conventional orthodontics alone would yield without phenotype modification.
CBCT — Post-SFOT phenotype-modified result
Post-SFOT Phenotype-modified result. Sustainable bone, stable position.

Three case images from the November 2026 invitation. The course works through cases like this in detail.

From Course Attendees

"Dr. Mandelaris delivers an exceptional educational experience that seamlessly bridges theory and clinical application. The SFOT course I attended last year was outstanding, featuring world-class live surgery, comprehensive materials, and a state-of-the-art learning facility. It is a must-attend for those dedicated to mastering interdisciplinary dentofacial therapy and elevating their practice."

Casey M. Herrera, DDS
Practice Limited to Periodontics & Implants

"The SFOT course given by Dr. Mandelaris opened my eyes to a whole new world of treating patients from the viewpoint of airway dentistry in the orthodontic sphere and the phenotype modification that helps our orthodontic colleagues to make that happen. He is also very knowledgeable on the subject of MARPE and expansion techniques, and brings in appropriate experts to develop a well-rounded course that is a font of information for those wanting to know more about this innovative and integrative concept."
